I just discovered Ecoist, “accessories for the eco minded”. Founded in 2004 and based in sunny Miami, the company’s mission statement is to merge design with s
ocial and environmental consciousness. They produce handbags, belts, wallets, and even placemats out of recycled, organic and eco-friendly materials. They make a lot of bags and belts out of recycled wrappers, including an entire collection from recycled Luna Bar wrappers.
One of my favorite Ecoist collections is the line of products made from recycled movie billboards. Hollywood produces thousands of posters each year to hang up outside of theatres to promote new movies…the lifespan of most of these billboards is pretty short. As soon as movies leave the theatres, the posters are thrown away, eventually ending up in landfills. But Ecoist has salvaged some of these posters before they make it that far, and created durable, waterproof, one-of-a-kind totes and messenger bags for film buffs and fashionistas alike.
Select Ecoist products are sold in boutiques around the world, but you can always purchase directly through their website. Although not just for tree-huggers (after all, they’ve been featured in Elle, Lucky, Vogue & Vanity Fair, just to name a few), they remain true to their eco-friendly roots. In addition to using recycled materials, they’ve made a commitment to plant a tree for every handbag they sell.
