Hexing A Hurricane is one of only five films nominated for “Best American Documentary” at the Rome International Film Festival. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony in September.
I cannot rave enough about this film. If you’re local to New Orleans and haven’t seen it yet, let me tell you, you need to. And then you need to tell everyone you know to see it. Because everyone, especially non-New Orleanians, should see this movie. It’s the most accurate telling of what this whole Katrina experience has been like that I’ve seen. The film really covers a lot of different aspects of the NOLA-Katrina saga, and it does a good job of explaining how parts of the city seemed almost normal soon after the storm and some parts of the city still resemble a nuclear blast site almost a year later. I think a lot the reason why the film makes all of this so clear has to do with the fact that it was directed by a local, but also a lot to do with the fact that Jeremy Campbell is just a damned fine documentary filmmaker.
The documentary features Times Picayune columnist Chris Rose, voodoo priestess Sallie Ann Glassman, legendary NOLA newscasters Angela Hill & Garland Robinette, jazz musician Irvin Mayfield and many others.

Sounds like an amazing film. I’ll try to watch it at the NOLA website. If you want to publish a review of it at NewOrleansTruth.com, you’re welcome to do so. Just shoot me an email. The more people learn about this, the better.
