This Thursday, August 31st is the world premiere of my boyfriend’s newest short film, Sex Between Us. It will also be one of the first public screenings of his earlier film, The Date, which was selected for last year’s New Orleans Film Festival, but never got shown there as the film fest was postponed due to Hurricane Katrina (it will be featured in this October’s festival, however).
Incidentally, both Sex Between Us and The Date are about — what else? — dating and relationships. The latter film follows a man who is waiting for a blind date to arrive and who passes the time by imagining all of the worst possible scenarios. Sex Between Us is a story of an ex-couple who get together to catch up on old times and then must decide if that catching up will also include sex.
David, my boyfriend, is part of a growing community of independent New Orleans-based filmmakers. Founded in January, The New Orleans Filmmakers group consists of well over 100 members and has already begun publishing their own film magazine, Shutter.
The Thursday screening will also include films by other local filmmakers. It seems to be a recurring theme in New Orleans these days – different groups of artists banding together to support each other. If you’re outside of New Orleans, you can still subscribe to the Penguin Productions podcast, or you can check out tons of locally produced films by New Orleans filmmakers via TimeCode NOLA (both are also available through iTunes).
If you live in NOLA, come out and support your local filmmakers later this week. Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, August 31st
Time: 8 PM
Place: Howlin’ Wolf, 907 S. Peters, NOLA
Admission: $7
All proceeds go toward submitting this film to film festivals around the world (these submission fees can run $30 – $60/each depending).
