Plain Mabel & Jewelry Artist Erica Weiner

One of my favorite crafty-consignment shops is Plain Mabel; it is small enough that the artists’ goods aren’t lost among each other, and it is neatly divided up into categories based on craft and/or services.

airplane-bird-necklace-2-big.jpgMy favorite piece to come from the site is by Erica Weiner, a New York textile artist and jewelry designer. Her jewelry designs feature a found essence, working often with coins, vintage brass charms, compasses, and gemstones. The piece I wear nearly daily is the airplane and sparrow necklace (which has sold out on Plain Mabel!)– I’ve received so many flattering comments on it, and there are always questions about my relationship to planes. Many of her pieces have a bit of intelligence and wit behind them, featuring charms with whales, anchors, scissors, twigs, and even cicadas on them.

c901a.jpgFor those who are fans of the online comic strip, Something Positive, you’ll love knowing that the bendable, squishable, lovable, cuddle-able, meltable Choo Choo Bear cat hat is now ready to be worn on your head! This hat making kit is available from Platypus Dreams and come with pattern sheet, two skeins of super-soft pink yarn, heart-shaped button nose, handmade eyes, and black yarn. It’s the perfect idea for the upcoming holiday DIY & Made from the heart gift!

Made from animal-friendly vinyl with a contrasting, patterned lining, you’ll be sure to tote around your life in a fashionable and fun way. Be sure to check out her website for more fun bags featuring skunks, robots, luches, deer, penguins & more!
