Clocks & Cicadaes — Insect Lab by Mike Libby

by MissMischief on December 21, 2006

Good things are often passed on through friends; so I was delighted to hear about Insect Lab Studio from another Libby.

The story goes that Mike Libby once found a dead beetle, and then found an olddragonfly_1.jpg clock. He noticed how the internal workings of the two were similar, and wonderered whether or not they could be combined. He managed to do so, in the process creating a beautiful work of art and function out of a two lifeless objects. Libby creates his works from high class insect specimens from around the world, in addition to recycled watch and circuit pieces.

Many of the insects feature colored LEDs, gears, springs, minute hands, and dials. His works are beautiful and delicate, highlighting the similarities and complexities of the natural and technological world (as seen in the dragonfly, right). Each one is a beautiful piece of art, displayed in a shadow box or bell jar. While his site features only a few varieties of insects, he offers custom work doing his best to bring nature and technology together for your own specific desires.
