I woke up this morning to find this dedicated e-mail from Daily Candy in my inbox. I’m unsubscribing, as of today. Here’s the note I left them with:
I’m dissappointed in you, DailyCandy, I really am. I understand you have bills to pay and profit margins to meet or whatever, but really. Wal-Mart? The dedicated e-mails advertising SUVs were bad enough, now this?
The whole reason I subscribe to DailyCandy is because you usually bring me news about unique products I’d never know about otherwise. I like getting your tips about books, or sustainable travel options, or cool independent designers. NOT WAL-MART.
Ditch the mega-corporations and their dirty dollars and maybe I’ll think about subscribing again.
They say everyone has their price. Please, I’m begging you all, if I ever reach the point where my price is whatever Wal-Mart is willing to pay for advertising, shoot me dead in my tracks. Seriously. I don’t ever want to stoop that low.
Maybe the Daily Candy editors need to watch The Corporation. Or, I dunno, start thinking about something other than just the bottom line.

Wow, that reads so much like an ad! They probably let Walmart people write the entire thing.
Well, the “dedicated e-mails” pretty much are just ads. And really, I don’t have a problem with companies selling advertising, etc., because it’s really the only way something like DailyCandy can make money. But like I said, I always felt like the whole point of DailyCandy was to let people know about cool companies or products or events or whatever that they never would have known about otherwise.
Running ads for Wal-Mart or Jeep or Ford completely goes against that philosophy, IMHO.
I totally agree with you and I’m glad you let Daily Candy know how you feel.
oh that is the lame. walmart is the suck. now i am the sad and mad. not sure how effective the DC target is for walmart…or the whle superbowl schtick for that matter. or maybe we are just out of touch. marumpgh.
Right on!! I noticed another review had both Target and WalMart as advertisers. It just rubbed me the wrong way. But a “dedicated email?” That’s just over ther top. I did cut off my Daily Candy subscription due to all the ads. It was just too much. Good for you for speaking out.
I unsubscribed and am telling all i know to do the same… so gross. Just so far from where it was when I signed up for it so long ago…
yuck.
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who thinks this way about this. I stopped shopping at Walmart entirely a year or two ago, and I’m so glad, for so many reasons. Walmart = yuck, big time.
I can’t think of anything more antithetical to Daily Candy’s target audience than Wal-Mart. Talk about a bad call. I’ve been disenchanted with DC for awhile thanks to some of their off-topic sponsored emails, but this is a new low. I’ve unsubscribed to all editions and am going to just stick with the weekly Chill Out LA newsletter. I live in Los Angeles, and have found some great spa and beauty deals on ChillOutLA.com. Between that and Flavorpill’s weekly email, I think I’m pretty well covered. I don’t need Daily Candy clogging up my inbox every day anymore.
I totally agree with what you emailed them. Walmart? Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. The problem with big corporations is, they make it harder for smaller Indie businesses to make it.
They either blatantly steal ideas from the little guys or they have little 5 year olds in sweatshops making 3cents a day making the clothes that they sell.
Sad. Glad I unsubscribed.
I feel the exact same way! In fact, it was such a serious misstep, I’m surprised more media outlets haven’t picked this up. I unsubscribed from the 6 cities where I normally get the emails.
They screwed up. Big time.
I think I will be writing them as well and unsubscribing! I totally totally agree with you!! Can I do the “blog this” and put your entire post on my blog for my bloggers read?? Let me know if that is okay!!
elleabelle: Feel free to copy and paste and spread the word! Obviously from the overwhelming response to this post I’m not the only person who feels this way, and I bet if we all make our voices heard it might actually change the way they do things in the future around DC.
