Envirosax Eco-friendly Shopping Bags

by MissMalaprop on February 1, 2007

I recently wrote about taking baby steps to make positive changes both in my own life and the world around me.Envirosax

One of the things I’ve really been wanting to do is start actively carrying reusable shopping bags, and cut down on my plastic bag consumption. I have a cloth shopping bag in the trunk of my car, but I’m always forgetting to bring it into the store with me. It’s too bulky to easily fit into my purse, and it’s just one extra thing to carry around.

Mark from Envirosax recently contacted me to let me know about his company, and I think he may have the perfect solution to my problem.

Super lightweight and portable, the Envirosax are a much better alternative to reusable shopping bags than my bulky cloth bag. Each bag holds the equivalent of two supermarket bags, and yet when not in use, the individual bags roll up to only about 4″ x 2″.Envirosax

I really like the graphic series of bags. You can buy the bags individually or get all 5 in each series, which come in a storage pouch to keep them in when you’re not using them.

This company is pretty amazing, really. Based in the Australian rainforest, Mark and the rest of the Envirosax team practice what they preach. Their facilities feature solar hot water and veggie gardens, and as a chemistry teacher by trade, Mark has been working on promoting the teaching of sustainability in school curriculums.

You can find out more about the bags, or about Mark’s sustainable education endeavors at the website: Envirosax.

Wonderful! I’ve been wanting some myself, but find that comparable bags can run so much more. These ones are stylish, and affordable (which is something Miss Mischief loves quite a lot).

Oh, I love these. Thanks for sharing the info! I keep trying to convince myself to get out the sewing machine and create my own . . . but these are probably a lot cooler than whatever I would come up with.

I always re-use my paper bags as either packaging (better than butcher paper) or containers for recylcing. I know there must be better options so it’s great to see these.

Mark let me know that they’ll be coming out with two new bag designs around April or May, so keep your eye out for those too!

I’m definitely going to have to invest in a set…it’s so worth it.

They are certainly funky looking, useful bags.

However, we should be cautious about the ‘eco-friendly’ bit. These bags are way better than single use HDPE, but are still made from polyethylene from finite oil. You may also think these are made in the rainforest in Currumbin as is suggested on the Envirosax website, however they are made in China in probably not such such peaceful surrounds.

Our Earth Tote Bags are environmentally friendly and made from organic cotton, hemp or unbleached cotton. We too are based in Currumbin but our original, hand silk screen printed designs are inspired by the rainforest of the Gold Coast, in which we live. Those Envirosax are really cool. I’ve been into re-usable products for a while now and although you get them in super markets; which is a very good thing. However most of the bags are very plain. I live in the UK and have found these jute bags from a supplier in the midlands. They are pretty cool I like the patterned jute bags myself. There are lots of companies in the UK doing Jute products at the moment but they’re the only thing we have close to Envirosax.

I purchased both Envirosax and EnV bags – have to say I prefer the EnV bags! They are better made and last much longer!! Check out http://www.brightandbold.com for a huge selection with free shipping! I also love Onya-weigh bags ( http://www.onyabagsusa.com) for my produce! My veggies and fruits actually last longer!!

I looked around for a bag without prints or logos and found Sam Bags at Use It Again Sam. They’re really light and fold into a pouch that’s in the inside seam, come in great colors too. LOVE THEM! I always have one in my purse, and the clerks ask me all the time where I got my bag. I use them for everything including clothes shopping and schlepping my kids soccer stuff.
