Charity Fundraiser for Desire NOLA

by MissMalaprop on May 1, 2007

I can’t believe it’s May already. This year has flown by so far!

Well, it’s a new month and that means that the MissMalaprop.com charity fundraiser for The Green Project & Recycle for the Arts has come to a close. We managed to raise $200 for the group that salvages and recycles building supplies here in New Orleans. I know they’re going to appreciate it! I did a random drawing last night for the winner of the prize package of donated handmade goodies. The winner was Bridget, who lives right here in New Orleans. I’ll be delivering the prize to her shortly and let you know what she thinks!

Thanks again to everyone who donated money and thanks to all of the prize package sponsors: BornLippy, greenKangaroo, Sharon Foster Art, Valerie Tyler Designs, dejarnette, and Unique Products. Oh, and me too: dismantled designs.

Last night I set up the new Firstgiving donation page for our next New Orleans-based charity: Desire NOLA.

desirenola_logo.jpgDesire NOLA is a really amazing local non-profit that was formed following Hurricane Katrina. Organized by a passionate group of young community leaders, Desire NOLA is committed to rebuilding the Greater New Orleans area by assisting small businesses. Desire NOLA works to accomplish this goal by providing grants and business development assistance to locally owned businesses that embody the unique culture and ambiance of New Orleans.

Firstgiving changed up things a little bit with the length of time you can create a fundraiser to last. So instead of two months, this fundraiser will actually last for 3 months. That means you have through July to donate to this very worthy cause. To donate money, go here.

girlsrockcamp.jpgOh, and one last thing! Kpoene’ from the Ladies Independent Design League asked me to let you know about an online charity auction she’s helping with right now. She’s working with the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a non-profit summer day camp in New York City that gives girls ages 8-18 the opportunity to learn to play musical instruments and write and perform their own music. It helps to empower young girls through music education.

Right now they are raising funds to give scholarships so that girls can attend the camp. There’s some great stuff up for auction, including a Marc Jacobs handbag, dresses from indie designers and swag bags from Bust Magazine…and 100% of the winning bids go towards scholarships. Check out the auction & bid here.
