I just learned about this great blog, Crafting for a Cause, because their Livejournal community, 3000in2007, was featured on the LJ homepage. I saw the words “Help craft 3000 handmade items to donate to charity”, and of course I had to click to check it out.
The project got started as a way to honor the approximately 3,000 US soldiers that had died in Iraq by the end of 2006. The Livejournal community was created with the goal of donating 3,000 handmade items to charity in 2007. So far they’ve donated close to 450 handmade goods and they’re trying to reach 750 by the end of June.
The group supports a number of charitable organizations, and they’re open to suggestions. Common donated goods include knit squares for blankets, but you don’t have to knit or sew to join in. Other ideas are to bake a loaf of bread for a food bank or create something to be sold for charity. To find out more and help out, check the blog or the LJ community.

Hey, thanks!!! We are excited that we are really moving forward with this. I also talk about our progress a LOT on my podcast fairieknits.blogspot.com for the details on that
Donating craft items – or a themed basket that includes crafts or crafting resources – to organizations for fund raisers is a great idea, too. They use the itmes in their auctions or silent auctions to help raise money at special events. I got to create a fun basket of edible goodies for the Lukemia and Lymphoma Society a couple of months ago. When all was said and done, their event raised $64,000. Sure, my basket probably only went for a few bucks, but it’s cool knowing that I helped them reach that total.
