The Wal-Mart Effect

by MissMalaprop on August 23, 2007

I just finished reading The Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman. I found the entire book completely engrossing, and it made me consider things I’d never even thought about when it comes to the superstore giant.

I really liked the book because it maintained a pretty objective stance throughout. It’s neither pro Wal-Mart nor anti Wal-Mart, and it illustrates the good, the bad, and the downright shocking things that Wal-mart has been able to do because of its size and growth. It’s also written in an extremely readable manner.

Now that I’m addicted to PaperBackSwap, of course I thought about adding it to the system and passing it on that way as soon as I was done. But then I thought about how much it relates to the things I write about here… both indie business vs. megacorporations as well as sustainable business practices (or the lack thereof).

I’d like to pass my copy of this book on to one of you. My only condition is that whoever gets it has to keep the chain going once you’re done reading it, and you should pass it on to someone else to read, whether it’s to a close friend or using PaperBackSwap or a similar site.

If you’re interested in receiving the book, leave a comment on this post before midnight on Sunday (Central Standard Time – go here to figure out what time that is where you are). I’ll pick the recipient at random from the comments. If this is something people are interested in, I might do this again in the future with other books I’ve read.

I actually wouldn’t mind reading it!

i am SO wanting this! i’ll undoubtedly read it whether i “win” or not.

incidentally, have you read the now-classic Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich? very much up the same alley, and a book from which i learned a vast deal.

I added it to my queue at the library, so no need to add me to the contest. I just wanted to say thanks for psoting about this and what a good idea.

I would love to read this book! I grocery shop at Walmart weekly, but, get alot of flack about it from certain friends/family. Maybe this book will help explain why. Thanks and I always enjoy your site!

Like almost every other area in the USA, we’re in the midst of a Wal-Mart attempt at invasion. Would love to read this book (and promise to pass it on if I’m the lucky recipient).

First of all, I must say, this is an excellent idea! I might have to “borrow” it in the future. :o ) I’d love to be entered in the drawing.

I’ve have to look for that book at the library.

I’m with Felicia…if I don’t happen to get picked, I’ll probably look for the book at my local library.

I would love to read it as well. If I don’t “win”, I will definitely ask for it at my (very sad) local library.

My husband refuses to even set foot in Walmart. I know where he’s coming from, but it’s invaluable for some things, like diapers and other staples you can’t find for less anywhere else. Still, if he’s with me when I turn into the Walmart parking lot, he stays in the car. Won’t be long before my youngest is potty trained, thank God. ;-)

I would love to read this book. I worked in the telecommunications industry for 17 years and was a union representative most of that time. Wal-mart was taboo. Even when my oldest daughter went looking at colleges, they mentioned that there was a Wal-mart down the street and she immediately said, “I’m not allowed to shop at Wal-mart.”
After being laid off and not having a “real” job for 6 months, there are many days I think “hmmm, maybe I should go to Wal-mart… just this once.”
I think it would be interesting to read and see both sides of the story.
I will DEFINITELY check out the Library if I don’t win!
