Happy Carbon Neutral Holidays!

by MissMalaprop on December 24, 2008

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you have a great holiday, whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or just a secular day off of work!

My gift to you: a donation in your name of 136 pounds worth of carbon offsets courtesy of Brighter Planet.

They’re doing this in order to promote conservation of resources this holiday season. There are a limited number of these available, but all you have to do is go to their website and claim your offsets, and then you can pass on the gift to your friends & family as well. If you still have some last minute gift giving to do, they also offer gift offsets of different varieties.

Oh wow, this is quite excellent. Happy holidays to you!
Something for us all to think about re: conservation: if I’m doing the math right, it would take 154 trees to absorb one short ton of carbon dioxide. The United States produces 18-20 tons of carbon dioxide per capita annually.

My friends and I stumbled upon this too. I couldn’t figure out how the offsets were being paid for. Do you know any more about that? (I confess, I don’t know as much about Brightest Planet as I probably should.)

Merry Christmas!

@genna – Yeah, that’s definitely something to think about. Conservation should always be first and foremost, with offsetting to help with the rest.

@The Modern Gal – The way I understand it is that Brighter Planet is paying for the gift offsets (which would explain why there is a limited number). I got the notice about these gift offsets through them as my credit card is through Brighter Planet. Their credit card works like a lot of points cards do, except that for every dollar spent it goes towards a certain amount of offsets. They partner with Native Energy to do the offsets (they work on setting up new alternative power projects). Merry Christmas to you too!
