Handmade Shampoos and Chemical-free Hair Care

by Mallory Whitfield on March 26, 2009

My friend Liz asked me yesterday for recommendations for natural or handmade shampoo brands. She’s specifically concerned about sodium lauryl sulfate as well as other funky chemicals. For a quick check, the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database is the first place I turn to look for chemical-free hair care or any other advice about what I should and should not slather on my skin and hair. Products with a green rating = good to go. Products with a red rating are full of scary chemicals that you’ll want to avoid!

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps

Most of the Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps products score a green rating on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and are widely available. You can order them on Amazon, and I’ve also see them at Target and Whole Foods.

Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash

The Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash is another one that gets a good rating from Skin Deep and is readily available both at drugstores and on Amazon.

Handmade brands like those found on Etsy won’t be listed on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, but most handmade sellers are very careful to list all of the ingredients they use, and you can more easily and directly contact the maker if you have specific questions.
