Designer Dona Ducharme has been working among NYC’s fashion elite for more than a decade, but that doesn’t mean that she’s gone corporate. She designs and handcrafts each piece from her jewelry line herself, like this gorgeous, attention grabbing necklace made from vintage Lucite amber quartz, gold Czech glass and 14kt gold filled beads.
Her pieces are timeless and classic, and go to show how handmade can look just as luxurious as anything found in Macy’s or Saks. I caught up with her recently to find out a little more about her work.
Tell me a little about yourself and your work. Raised in Lima and New York I have always been surrounded by beautiful designs, textures, colors, architecture, sculptures and scenery. Inspired from an early age to create and make pretty things, I always find time to paint, make accessories. I am someone that pays great attention to details and I believe my jewelry reflects that. It is made in 14k Gold Filled, Sterling Silver, Semi-Precious stones, Swarovski crystal, Czech glass and vintage components.
How did you get started as a designer? Beautiful stones have always caught my attention, even as a child I used to collect and paint beach pebbles. I always had the desire to make beautiful things and jewelry is just the perfect combination between my desire to express my childhood memories and myself.
What inspires your work? My inspiration can come from any direction. It could be surprising sometimes what can trigger an idea in me. The tough part is to translate a vision into actual jewelry, for that I use a notebook where I created collages allowing colors and ideas come together naturally.
Who are your favorite designers? Cristobal Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Christian Lacroix, Chanel, and Dolce & Gabbana.
What are your fashion & beauty must-haves? My top fashion must–haves, first and always jewelry! Sunglasses come at close second, and then shoes, black or nude pumps. Well fitted pair of pants, manly jackets and most important…a good attitude. My top beauty must–haves are a good face wash, moisturizer, lots of water and fruits.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers? Enjoy the process, designing is a state of mind, not a job per se. Live today, and keep getting good at your craft, practice, and practice! What really matters is to love what you do and have fun with it.
