Japanese Inspired Accessories – The Traditional Craft of Tsumami Kanzashi

by MissMalaprop on May 27, 2009

Gochemoche is the brainchild of a Turkish and German couple (who just got married this month — congratulations!). Gogce Kayihan is a scientist by day who designs Japanese inspired accessories along with her husband. Together they create beautiful hair clips, brooches, pouches and more out of vintage kimono pieces and other fabrics with an Asian influence.

Gogce was inspired to learn the ancient art of Tsumami Kanzashi, as she has a great fondness for all forms of Japanese arts and crafts and Japanese fabrics.

Looking at her work inspired me to find out more about this traditional art form, and I also discovered Atelier Kanawa on Etsy, which is the shop of Kuniko Kanawa, a professionally trained artisan who has studied under one of only five acknowledged Tsumami Kanzashi artisans in Japan and is also a certified Kimono consultant of the all Japan Kimono Consultant Association.

If you’d like to see this amazing art form in action, check out the Atelier Kanawa videos on YouTube:

I also stock a selection of super cute Japanese inspired Kanzashi hair accessories made by Seattle based artist Thea Starr in my online shop. Here is a sneak peek of some of her past work:

I remember when I first discovered these floral designs online and I wanted so badly to learn how to make them. It’s so great to see people offering these on Etsy for sale. So beautiful!
