Hey all you local peeps, listen up because I’ve got a few bits of crafty news that might be of interest to you!
First off, there’s a new blog and forum for all things craft and DIY related in Louisiana. Check out the Handmade Louisiana blog for updates, or chime in on the Handmade Louisiana forums and discuss where and how you get your craft on in this great state!
Next weekend here in New Orleans we’ll be celebrating Memorial Day weekend at the Bayou Boogaloo! This year’s event is going to be bigger, better and greener than ever! There will be solar-powered music stages, loads of yummy locally grown and organic food and drink available, and a special green arts market and eco-education stations. I’ll be helping my friends Heather and Kerry run a t-shirt upcycling station — come out and learn how to transform your old t-shirts into fabulous new designs! If you’ve got old t-shirts lying around your house that you never wear anymore, please bring them with you to the fest — we’ll show you how to make them into something new again!
If you’re already an expert at recycling those old clothes, or even an amateur without a drop of sewing experience, sign up to participate in the 3rd annual Worn Again Fashion Show, to benefit Recycle for the Arts. I had a blast participating in the first two events, and I’m excited to do it again this year — it’s always tons of fun!
Worn Again is now accepting submissions from both professional and amateur designers to take the challenge and create original wearable art using random recycled materials provided by the Worn Again team. The winning designs will be showcased at Worn Again’s Patron Party and runway show and be eligible for fabulous prizes! Deadline for registration is Friday May 29th. Please contact Team Worn Again at recycle4thearts@gmail.com for submission details and registration forms.
Also, mark your calendars for Thursday, June 18 because the New Orleans Craft Mafia will be celebrating our 4 year anniversary with an awesome party and trunk show at Twisted! We’re also working hard to try and bring a screening of Handmade Nation to New Orleans this fall, so stay tuned!
