Today is the 3 year anniversary of the day I launched MissMalaprop.com! I can’t believe how far I’ve come in these three short years. (You can see my very first post here.)
I feel like I’ve learned so much and I’ve been proud to watch both the handmade community and the green movement grow stronger than ever. I’ve also made some really great friends, both online and in person, along the way, including Jen from Indie Fixx who is also celebrating her blog’s 3rd anniversary this month!
I recently found out that Crissy Herron, the founder of IndieBizChicks.com is celebrating her website’s 2nd anniversary this month as well, and since I’ve become an avid listener of her podcasts I thought it would be fun to do an interview with her about how her site got started and what it’s all about.
How did IndieBizChicks get its start? Well, I knew I wanted to make a website, so I started learning that process. I had previously been looking for information on working from home and saw that it was mostly targeted to moms. I did some research and realized how many people in their 20s and 30s wanted info on working at home and/or starting a business, so I created a site targeted to that age bracket, and I left all the “mom” stuff out. Yes – some of my readers are moms, but I try to leave that at the door, because I want everyone to feel that they can be an Indie Biz Chick.
What is your background as an entrepreneur? IndieBizChicks is my first “business” – I had been working as an independent contractor, so that is entrepreneurial in some regards. But this is the first time where all the decisions were my own.
Can you tell me a little more about the member’s center of the site? What types of entrepreneurs will find the material there most useful? Most of the info in the Members Center is focused on marketing – so anyone who needs help with getting the word out about their business will appreciate it. As always, I try to keep the info simple to understand and affordable for someone to implement into their own business.
What’s in the future for IndieBizChicks? What will year 3 bring? I am hoping to do more in-person events around the country. I love to get out there and meet the people who visit my site!
To find out more about IndieBizChicks, I highly recommend you check out Crissy’s website and especially her podcasts! I love listening to her interviews with indie biz super stars like Venus Zine founder Amy Schroeder and Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching fame!
