Fashion for the Greater Good

I just found out yesterday that TOMS shoes did a shoe drop here in New Orleans last week, to local school children in the area. Apparently their state-side shoe drops work a little differently than when they distribute shoes to children outside of the US. The thinking is that kids in the US, even if they’re living below the poverty line, probably have at least one pair of shoes, but they might be hand-me-downs. So TOMS fits them with a pair of brand new white canvas shoes along with art supplies to encourage the kids to decorate them and make them their own. I love that concept. The pictures of the kids receiving their new shoes here in NOLA were so adorable!

Megan Nichols of ExcellentCreations is also using her creative powers for good. Her son was born with a heart defect that required open heart surgery when he was just 3 days old. Congenital heart defects can affect 1 in 150 babies born and possibly more, and it is a subject that needs a lot of research and attention. Megan donates 10% of the proceeds from all sales of her beautiful handmade jewelry to the Children’s Heart Foundation.

One of the volunteers came in to the spa on Saturday and she said they had a great time. I thought of you, of course!

I’ve heard lots of great things about TOMS, this looks like a very worthwhile project :)
