Quilling: The Lost Art of Rolled Paper Filigree

by MissMalaprop on October 22, 2009

Ann Martin of all things paper has just introduced me to a craft that I didn’t even realize existed! Her art is called rolled paper filigree or quilling, and these techniques have been around for hundreds of years. Quilling faded out of fashion for awhile, but it’s making a comeback due to its simplicity — the main things you need are just some narrow strips of paper and craft glue.

Ann recently used quilling techniques to make this amazing bird pendant. Out of paper! If I didn’t know better, I never would have guessed that paper was used to create this beautiful pendant. Another of Ann’s incredible creations? This ring of keys — all made from quilling paper!

Ann offers up a lot of quilling tutorials on her blog, all things paper. Her simple flower card tutorial is supposed to be great for beginners, or you can find out how to make filigree pendants like her goreous bird. She’s also got a great tutorial for a paper bead Christmas card.
