Indie Biz Chicks Experiment – 1st Blog Post Round-up!

by MissMalaprop on June 13, 2010

As I mentioned on Friday, I’m participating in a little blogging experiment this summer. The experiment involves Crissy of Indie Biz Chicks, Jen from JenKiaba.com and RJ from Designed by RJ. (Plus me of course!) We’re reading each other’s blogs and writing up a little something about our favorite posts from the past week on Sundays.

Jen interviewed Keri-Anne of GingerlilyTea Photography about getting your products noticed by magazines and designers. Both have a background in photography and the two chatted about how taking the time to participate and collaborate with other artists can really pay off and lead to more exposure for your own work.

Crissy of Indie Biz Chicks also writes about how to get exposure for your own work and how to develop your business to compete with the big guys, even if you’re just an itty-bitty business. I like her recent post on Can Watching QVC Help Your Biz? I think it’s important for crafters and small time business people to remember that even though we may be doing things on a smaller level, many of the same rules can apply to us as to the big companies. We have a lot to learn from them, whether it’s emulating the things they do right, or figuring out how to do things differently when the corporate culture gets things wrong. (Check out this recent post on Smaller Box for an example of how the big companies, in this case Overstock.com, can sometimes get things horribly wrong, and how we can learn from their mistakes.)

RJ, who is a talented jewelry designer in her own right, has been doing a bit of traveling lately, and used Google Maps to help her figure out where she and her partner should travel next. I’ve always loved using maps to pinpoint where you’ve been and where you want to go. For awhile, I had a big world map that I literally used pins to show where I’d been. The Google Map is so much easier, and I like the idea of a couple or friends using different colors to show where they’ve been separately and where they’ve travelled together. I might have to do one of these for myself soon!

Also, I’m happy to announce that we have a randomly chosen winner for the $50 gift certificate giveaway – Scott! Thanks to everyone who entered and participated. All of your feedback has been extremely helpful, and I’m going to try and put as many of your suggestions into practice as possible. Thanks!
