PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.
Some of you may have noticed that my blog went black yesterday. I joined alongside many other websites, including Wikipedia, Mozilla, and BoingBoing, in protest of the SOPA censorship bill that will be voted on in Congress next week. If you’re not already familiar with this bill, please go here and take action.
I also recently read this great article in the Gambit on the issue of pit bulls in New Orleans. Apparently we have one of the largest per-capita populations of pit bulls, and many of those dogs are finding themselves in abusive situations or in local animal shelters, where the populations are so large that many are put to sleep.
The whole article made me so sad, but still gives me hope because I know there are so many people in this town who love their dogs, and I know many loving pit bull owners especially. Our Molly is a Lab-mix, but she was a stray, a street dog, and while right now we can only really afford to take care of one dog, when I do get the point of bringing another dog into my life, it will DEFINITELY be a rescue dog, and may very well be a pit bull. I have a lot of friends who have the sweetest pit bulls and I know what a great breed they can be, in spite of their undeserved bad reputation.
The article explains a lot of the ways that people can help – obviously if you can adopt a dog, that is one of the best ways to help, but there are also many ways to volunteer or donate to local rescue groups like The Sula Foundation and ARNO.
