Go Green with Bottleless Water Coolers by Quench

by MissMalaprop on August 21, 2011

I’ve written here before about why bottled water sucks, and some tips for kicking the bottled water habit. I was recently introduced to another great company dedicated to ridding the world of bottled water.

Quench is a green-minded company that offers bottleless, filtration-enabled water coolers, that are healthier, more cost effective alternatives to traditional office bottled water coolers. Whether it’s the small bottles of water you pick up at the store, or those big bottled water coolers familiar to many offices, putting water in bottles and driving it around to various destinations takes time, money, and fossil fuels. Which all seems really, really silly for something so simple and vital to everyone’s life.

Quench offers a rental service of their filtered water coolers that is ideal for offices and other organizations. These coolers are a cleaner, safer alternative to bottled water delivery, and they are also cheaper. Quench offers an easy to use calculator on their website to help you compare costs of water bottle delivery services versus their service.

In addition to offering a product that is by nature meant to eliminate waste, Quench also employs many other environmentally friendly practices. You can read more about their quest to be as green as possible here.

Recycling & Waste Management by DS Smith Recycling

by MissMalaprop on August 14, 2011

DS Smith Recycling is one of the UK’s leading leading waste management and business recycling companies. They work with some of the largest companies and organizations there, including The Guardian, Marks & Spencer, Ministry of Defence, and Tesco, to offer a variety of services including paper recycling and cardboard recycling. Every year, they help keep over 1.9 million tons of waste out of landfills.

If you have a business in the UK, check out their full list of recycling and waste management services. They can do everything from simple recycling pickup to a full recycling audit, which will measure your current performance against best practices and help you identify ways in which your business can improve, saving you money and keeping more waste out of landfills.

Check out their website for a list of additional resources. I just discovered 2 great sites with tons of information there: Waste Watch and letsrecycle.com.

Kickstarter Pick: Sheaux Fresh Sustainable Foods

by MissMalaprop on August 13, 2011

This week’s Kickstarter Pick is another local one: Sheaux Fresh Sustainable Foods is a family owned company that started as a way for one family to grown their own food in their backyard. Nine years, three children and 14 chickens later, they grow more food than they can eat and get more requests than they can handle for their fresh, organic, affordable produce. They are currently trying to raise $5,000 to expand to a second garden so that they can help make more fresh food available to their neighborhood.

On their website, they also offer gardening classes and services to the community, and you can hire them to build your garden or create a custom chicken house. Check out their current Kickstarter campaign and see how they’re trying to make New Orleans a healthier place to eat.

4 Tips for Safe & Easy Bicycle Commuting

by MissMalaprop on August 5, 2011

Right now the weather is so hot outside that even my most bike-loving friends have been having trouble doing a lot of bicycle commuting lately. But soon the leaves will turn, weather will change, and it will be the perfect season for bicycling once again! In honor of one of my current sponsors, Leisure Lakes Bikes, I thought I’d put together some tips for making bicycle commuting easier, safer and more fun!

1. Stay safe, stay visible.
Sometimes I’ve slacked about wearing a helmet on my bicycle, but after my co-worker Lindsey recently got into a really, really bad bicycle accident, I’ve sworn to be much more vigilant. Get a cycling helmet that fits comfortably and wear it!

If you’re going to be doing a lot of biking, especially if you’re riding at night, invest in some gear to make yourself visible to cars and other vehicles. Leisure Lakes has a great array of high visibility clothing & accessories, as well as bike lights. (These skully lights are pretty rad, right??)

2. Make it easy to haul your stuff.
There are a ton of different options for hauling stuff around on your bike – messenger bags, front baskets, rear baskets, panniers. Me? Right now I just have a simple detachable front basket, but I would love, love, love some of the super cute bike panniers by Queen Bee Creations or one of the handmade bicycle boxes from Bates Crates.

3. Get the right bike.
Different bikes work better for different terrains and types of commutes. Obviously if you live someplace hilly, you probably need a different type of bike than us flat-landers here in New Orleans. For some people with longer commutes, biking can still be an option. If you live in the suburbs of a major urban that has a lot of traffic congestion, it might be easier to take a train or drive in part of the way, and once you get into town, unload a folding bike and ride the rest of the way in, zipping around all of that traffic. Get some exercise and save some time!

4. Keep it cool & stay fresh.
Most workplaces don’t have a shower, so on your way into work, make it an easy ride if you don’t want to get too sweaty. Bring a change of clothes, and make sure you leave home early enough so that you don’t feel rushed. On days where I’ve ridden to work and I knew it was going to be super hot anyway, I brought a washcloth from home so that when I went to change clothes I could do a quick cool off and wipe away the sweat. Be sure to bring some deodorant too – I like the idea of one of these all natural deodorant sprays by Ophelia’s Apothecary – a perfect way to cool down and smell fresh at the same time!
