Happy New Year!

by MissMalaprop on December 30, 2011

Stratosphere Mary Janes by Chie Mihara, discovered via Pinterest

Sure these fancy-schmancy shoes are marketed to brides-to-be, but wouldn’t they make lovely New Year’s Eve shoes, perfect for dancing the night away?? I discovered them this morning and fell in love instantly. (A girl can dream….)

No matter what your plans this New Year’s, I hope you have a fabulous one! We’ve got at least 3 different French Quarter parties to try to hit tomorrow night. I might even wear one of my favorite Christmas presents – David got me these amazing red & black striped skinny jeans from Motel Rocks!!!

I can’t wait! I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve!!

Couple Of – Israeli Indie Designer Shoes

by MissMalaprop on September 29, 2011

I recently got hip to the Israeli indie shoe brand Couple Of. With collections inspired by a mix of modern and vintage styles, these shoes are hand made under fair trade conditions. Right now all of their styles are on sale over at Amalia, an online boutique specializing in Israeli independent fashion designers.

One of my fabulous readers, Sebastian, recently tipped me off to a very cool company called Wrecords By Monkey.

Now, I’ve seen a lot of artists doing a lot of very cool things with recycled vinyl records. (My friend Mags and her record clocks being one of my personal faves.) But these Recycled Record and Cassette Tape Saddle Shoes, made by Wrecords By Monkey and Sonic Fabric, might take the cake. Hand cobbled with a fair trade leather sole and a recycled tire heel, these shoes have uber-hipster appeal. Weird, wonderful, recycled, but also very wearable.

They make lots of other cool jewelry and accessories out of old albums as well. I’ve seen plenty of record cuffs before, but I do like the designs they put on theirs:

Check out the full array of their designs at wrecordsbymonkey.com.

I was recently contacted by Mark from PlanetShoes.com about reviewing a pair of shoes from their company. I already knew a little about PlanetShoes.com because my best bud Ashe Mischief reviewed some shoes from them a few months ago on her blog. Thanks to her, I already knew that they were a company dedicated to operating as sustainably as possible: they are affiliated with 1% For The Planet and Green America. (I’m actually in the process of trying to get my own business approved to be part of Green America – they do a very extensive screening process, so if a business gets approved with them, you can be sure they’re really trying their hardest to go green!)

PlanetShoes.com has also partnered with Carbonfund.org to offer their exclusive CarbonFree® Plus Shipping initiative, and they offer a wide selection of both eco-friendly shoes and vegan shoes, by many different brands. I had the chance to test drive a pair of vegan Keen Coronado Mary Jane shoes:

A lot of the shoes by Keen, including their popular sandal styles, are not really my type of shoe, but I just recently got rid of my 1st pair of Keen shoes. Last summer, I had ordered the Mary Janes made from woven recycled rice paper (which I wrote about here), but the material ended up being not very forgiving, and the strap across my foot made them very uncomfortable. However, despite the problems with that first pair of shoes, I was willing to give Keen another shot, because I could tell how comfortable they WOULD have been, had it not been for that one issue. So when Mark suggested I try out a pair of vegan shoes from PlanetShoes.com and I noticed the similar Coronado Mary Janes by Keen I wanted to try them out. The natural canvas upper on these shoes is much more forgiving and the polyurethane footbed is SUPER cushy and comfortable. These will be great for wearing during the summer with my denim skirts! They will also be great for wearing during art markets, as the footbed will make standing on my feet all day a breeze!

I will not lie, these are two pairs of shoes on the PlanetShoes.com website I found myself really wishing I could have picked:

Never mind that the first pair of shoes, the Veria sandal by Earthies, is a similar shape to a pair of shoes I already own. The shape is classic (meaning these could stay in my closet a LONG time) and the color is timeless! And the other pair, Naya’s Briar, is so, so perfect. My only problem would have been choosing them in black versus blue. (They also come in a brown version too, but I never wear brown.) I also really like how for many of their shoe options, PlanetShoes.com also posts a video in addition to just still photos, so you can see what the shoes look like on a real person and how they look when you walk.

For a huge selection of eco-friendly shoes and vegan shoes, be sure to check out PlanetShoes.com!

PlanetShoes offering you free shipping on orders over $49

*Note: I became an affiliate of PlanetShoes after writing this review because I was so pleased with their service and eco-conscious business model. If you click through and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission from the sale. That said, I only ever promote affiliate links if the products are something I honestly believe in and support, and either have used or would use myself.

Covet Covet Covet

by MissMalaprop on November 5, 2010

My personal holiday wishlist consists of Ureshii dresses and Fluevog shoes.

Oh you saucy Canadians! (Clearly all that cold weather helps to breed great design.) Gift certificates are available from each (Ureshii, Fluevog), in case you’re so inclined…
