Steals and Deals!

Posted by MissMalaprop on July 22nd, 2008

There’s a couple of giveaways and sales going on that I thought you should know about. One of those giveaways will be happening here on MissMalaprop, starting in a couple of days, so stay tuned! (It’s gonna be a good one, I promise.)

The second giveaway is a collaboration between indie bath & body company mi SPA and Feterie - Modern Stationery (who I interviewed yesterday over at Styledash).

It’s this week and next, through August 1st and there will be a winner each week, who will receive a Pretty-mi-body set from mi SPA and from Feterie comes a WordPlay Greetings Sampler Set (week 1) or 2 sheets of Eco-Luxe Gift Wrap (week 2). Get more details and to enter, go here.

The Etsy BeadWeavers (EBW) Street Team is also having a sale! They’re a group of over 125 artists from around the world who share a common love of the ancient art of beadweaving. Many of their members have had their work featured in magazines, with some of them even gracing the covers! Every month the group has a challenge and the public gets the choose the winner. Check out the amazing entries from the last challenge, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, like this Worlds Collide Necklace by ThePreciousBeads:

You can vote for the current Art Deco challenge starting on August 9th. (I’m excited to see the entries - Art Deco is one of my all-time favorite styles!)

The group is currently in the middle of their first ever Midsummer Sale! It runs through this Sunday, and you can go here to check out all the details about deals on these designs. I’m so amazed when people make really elaborate, beautiful things out of these tiny seed beads… It’s gotta be so much hard work!

DIY City Mag New Orleans

Posted by MissMalaprop on July 19th, 2008

DIY City Mag’s New Orleans issue came out this week. It’s so amazing to see all of these local artists represented in one place! I was already either familiar with or I’m friends with a lot of them, but some of the NOLA artists featured were new to me too.

I wrote a couple of pieces for it. If you’ve ever wanted to know EVEN MORE about all the amazing things that New Orleans has to offer, check it out. I’m so proud to call this city home and share it with so many incredible people.

Never Ender Online Indie Boutique

Posted by MissMalaprop on July 9th, 2008

Never Ender is an awesome indie boutique that has been operating out of Reno, Nevada for over three years now. It was founded with the goal of selling art-based clothing and accessories for guys and girls by emerging artists and designers, and it features a gallery of artwork as well.

Never Ender recently made the switch from a brick-and-mortar boutique to an even more diverse online store. In addition to a wide array of handmade items, Never Ender also specializes in selling eco-friendly items and they use recycled packaging and paper as much as possible.

I love these adorable hand printed seahorse patches made from recycled fabric by Hearth and Forge. So cute!

You can browse the blog by discount amount or type or sign up to receive the email newsletter so you’ll know as soon as any new promos have been added. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me!

Latest Happenings

Posted by MissMalaprop on October 11th, 2007

I got home from my New Jersey trip late Tuesday night (early Wednesday morning) and then I had to work yesterday so I’m still trying to get caught up on a million things. Soo… here’s a run down of a few things that are happening:

* Blog Action Day is this coming Monday, October 15th. I’ll be hosting the Etsy Bloggers Street Team Carnival. So if you’re a member of the team, be sure to submit your eco & Etsy themed posts from this week for inclusion! And even if you’re not an Etsy blogger, you can still participate in Blog Action Day. Just make a green themed post on your blog on Monday and help raise awareness for environmental issues.

Cutique.com giveaway prizes* Awesome indie shopping portal Cutique is giving away this gift basket of handmade goodies, valued at over $125. All you have to do to enter the drawing is sign up for their mailing list before October 31st.

* New Orleanian Matthew wrote to let me know about a cool new site he’s been working on called Menu Orleans which offers scanned menus for restaurants all around the New Orleans area. It’s a great resource if you’re thinking about ordering take out or can’t decide where to eat. It’s still a work in progress, but you can submit scanned menus if you have one that isn’t already there.

* MissMalaprop favorite Envirosax just released a new line of their reusable shopping bags made from sustainable bamboo fabric. They’ve also got hemp and linen organic fabricmaki squarepatch beaver pouch alternatives, plus their great graphic print bags now come in a cute retro kitchen series.

* Maki Squarepatch has a bunch of cute new goodies in their shop, like this beaver pouch, handmade from recycled materials, plus almost everything in the shop is currently on sale for 10% off as they make way for new stuff for the holidays.

PR Program for Emerging Indie Designers

Posted by MissMalaprop on October 10th, 2007

Kristin from The Vanguard PR recently contacted me to let me know about an exciting new program her company is offering for emerging indie designers. The Bright Eyes Designer Outreach Program, aka BEDOP, is explained best by Kristin in the interview below, but it sounds like an amazing chance for indie artists to learn some valuable PR skills they can use to get the word out about their own lines. Check it out:

In a nutshell, what is the BEDOP program?

The BEDOP program is mentorship program where we take one designer and teach them all about the ins and outs of the world of pr. Each season, The Vanguard agency sifts through all of its applications for the BEDOP and hand selects one applicant that we feel fits the vision of a cutting edge designer with focus, determination, a marketable collection, intense knowledge of fashion, and the drive to succeed. The applicants are carefully screened through an interview session with both of our founders to ensure they uphold the standards and make sure there vision is on line with that of our agency. The chosen designer meets with industry experts like brand managers, and special events planners, and creative directors from fashion brands around the country that help to mentor and guide these designers to ensure their collection is operating at its fullest potential and to streamline and help market their collection.

Through this one month journey, they are also learn top secret inside information about the world of pr; everything from how to write a press release to the do’s and don’t of pr to how to pitch your product to different media outlets. Upon graduation from the program, the graduates leave with an immense knowledge of how to effectively target specific areas of the media along with a properly branded image of their product. They also received a graduation package that includes tools like a newly drafted press release for their brand, the experts book on the world of pr, and a database of industry professionals that they can take with them to help pitch their line to and garner press for their line. The program has been extremely effective in helping our BEDOP brands succeed and better understand the world of public relations.

How did the idea for the program come about?

The program really came about from my experiences of reaching out to designers that were very interested in our services, but couldn’t afford it at the time. It was my chance to pay it forward to all of those who I have spoken with who were struggling to buy fabric for next season, much less have to worry about a marketing budget as well. I knew there were those creative visionaries out there who I really wanted to find a way to work with and build their brand. I wanted to build a relationship with these up and coming designers that when they become rich and successful came back to me and said, “Hey, you were here for me and taught me so much when no one else was there and when no one believed in my line.” I love being a mentor and if I can pay along my knowledge and help another fashionite out, then why not? Everyone deserves a chance to shine.

I also felt that designers really need to have a handle on exactly what pr was and how it is so important to garner exposure for your brand. I think that a lot of young designers look at a pr firm’s client list and think they will be able to see the same results. Not true! You have to have a connection with the agency, understand what they can do and should be willing to do for you, and ensure that you are knowledgeable about what you, as a client are entitled to. With the BEDOP program, this is my chance to connect with these designers and make a change.

What kinds of designers are you looking to work with? Is this strictly for fashion designers, or are other indie artists eligible as well?

We support any kind of young, independent emerging artist with a vision that is passionate their brand. I love to meet and connect with anyone that has the same love for fashion, design, and puts their heart and soul into everything that they do. It’s important to place yourself with people that are like minded and successful. These things are contagious!

Who are your personal favorite indie designers & brands?

I really love the line PLASTK. It’s an amazing shoe collection with sex appeal, creativity, and brings to the table a fresh look on design and style in the footwear industry. These guys are very passionate about their collection and you can tell in the quality and aesthetics of their line. Also, Chenny K, an Australian handbag line. All of their bags are genuine creations of art. Amazing pieces!

If you think the BEDOP sounds like an amazing program, be sure to check out all The Vanguard Agency has to offer. Their clients are the cream of the crop in emerging, independent designers to watch.

Indie Shopping Directories

Posted by MissMalaprop on September 7th, 2007

Shortly after I mentioned the We Love Etsy social network the other day, I found out about a new Etsy Shops Directory, also by We Love Etsy. Over 800 unique Etsy shops have been added to the directory already, and more are being added every day. This new directory is cool because it organizes the shops by category (think jewelry, clothing, or repurposed items) and it also breaks those categories down even further (built-from-scratch clothing, t-shirts, lingerie, etc.). Etsy currently lets you shop for items by category but it’s a little trickier to search for entire shops by category, so this new directory is pretty helpful. (Etsy is currently working on revamping the way their categories work, to make things easier, but they’ve announced this won’t go into affect until after the holidays.) Possibly the most fun feature is the Visit Random Shop link… click it, because you never know what you might discover!

Killer Cotton

Want even more ways to discover indie artists? Check out Killer Cotton, a link directory where you can search by item, style, or price for unique independently made goods, plus you can read user reviews for each business or rate them and add your own. If you’re an indie designer, it’s free to list your own biz, and if you’re just an indie shopper, it’s a great way to get your opinion out there and give some feedback for your favorite shops! (Another perk about writing reviews is that every month they pick one new review and give the winning reviewer a free t-shirt from one of the Killer Cotton indie sponsor sites.)

Blogs & Things

Posted by MissMalaprop on March 9th, 2007

There are so many great new blogs and sites and things to do online popping up lately that it’s hard to keep track of them all! So real quick, I thought I’d give a rundown of some of my favorite new blogs and sites:

Blogs

  • Jen from Indie Fixx has recently started a new blog called The Crafty World, in which she’ll be writing about her various crafty inspirations that just don’t quite fit the theme of Indie Fixx. She’s one of my favorite bloggers, so be sure to check her new blog out!snoopybytamron.jpg
  • Another great blog I’ve been reading lately is iCiNG. A hodgepodge of quirky style advice, the lovely host Gala encourages reader participation - you can even join in the fabulous fun for International Dress Up Day!
  • If funky, quirky style is your thing (I know it’s certainly mine!), make sure to also check out the new blog Fashion Binge. It’s written by a team of three bloggers, one of which is the lady who made this Snoopy charm necklace and runs the kitschy jewelry shop Tamron on Etsy.

Social Networking

  • I’ve found myself spending a bit of time on Zaadz recently. Think of it as social networking for people who want to change the world.
  • Lov.li and Curbly are also both fun ways to kill some time if you’re into all things crafty and diy. Curbly is fab if you’re into do-it-yourself home decor, and Lov.li is sort of like Etsy meets Myspace. Both are great fun!

Shop & Createpunkinnyc.jpg

  • Whether you’re an independent fashion designer or just a fan of indie fashion, you might want to take a peek at Smashing Darling, a new site dedicated to bringing indie fashion to a wider audience. The site is brand new, so there are only a few designers so far, but there is already some nice stuff like this dress by Punkin NYC.
  • Finally, if you’re creatively inclined, be sure to check out Fred Flare’s Next Big Thing contest. This annual contest has had some amazing entries in the past, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. In addition to having their work featured for sale on Fred Flare, this year’s 27 winners will also qualify to win a $1000 prize, for the “fred fan fave”, which will be voted on by Fred Flare customers.

Interview at Box vs. Indie

Posted by MissMalaprop on February 27th, 2007

I recently did an interview over at Box vs. Indie, a new blog dedicated to exposing all the reasons why buying handmade and indie is better than shopping at the big box stores. My interview was just published today and is the first in a series of interviews with various indie supporters. You can read the full interview here.

Shop Indie and Eco-Friendly for 2007

Posted by MissMalaprop on December 26th, 2006

Happy holidays everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful holiday season so far, though if you’re anything like me it’s not really over until New Year’s has come and gone. Nevertheless, happy holidays, and best of luck to every single one of you in the coming year!

I’ve had a good holiday season so far, although I’ve got to admit, I’m about ready for it to all be over. It seems as though there’s been some sort of party or craft market or event for me to attend every couple of days or so for the past few weeks now…I’m exhausted!

I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed and ready for the fresh start of a new year. I think the people at Ideal Bite must have been reading my mind this morning…I opened up my inbox to this tip, all about recycling and getting rid of all that extra stuff in an eco-friendly way. This is something that I’ve already been thinking about a lot recently…ways to eliminate some of the clutter without just creating more waste in the landfills.

My New Year’s Resolution #1: Recycle more. Buy less. Buy recycled or sustainable whenever possible.

This is a personal resolution of course, but I’ll be working hard to seek out the best in recycled and sustainable goods to bring to you in the coming year. Luckily, many independent artists and designers are already vigilant about utilizing eco-friendly components in their work as much as possible.

It’s just another reason to buy indie in 2007. Stay tuned to MissMalaprop for the best in independent and eco-friendly shopping finds!

Blogs Worth Loving

Posted by MissMalaprop on December 1st, 2006

I’ve been slacking a bit lately with the blog love, so today I’m bringing you three great blogs worth loving!

berg xmasFirst up, check out the Big Easy Rollergirls blog. I’ve been to every BERG bout this season so far, and I’ve loved every minute. They’re currently recruiting referees, so now is a great time to join up if you live in New Orleans (plus guys & girls can join in on the ref action).

I’ve been kicking myself since last spring when the rollergirls held an open tryout and I didn’t go….I’d love to be a rollergirl myself, I just don’t have the time! There are roller derby leagues popping up all over the country lately, so find out if there’s one in your area. Roller derby bouts are definitely events not to be missed!

Nolé Style and Beauty IndulgenceNext, try Nolé Style and Beauty Indulgence. I just discovered this one today and was delighted when I realized that such a well put together website & blog spotlighting independent businesses was created by a fellow Louisiana resident.

NoleStyleandBeauty.com was launched in early November by Ayana E. of Shreveport, LA. She’s already got a lot of familiar indie designers on her site & blog, plus there’s got a great indie gift guide with 50 products under $50. Did I mention how fresh and professional the site design looks?necklace by Dreams and Jewelry

Finally, look to the Dreams & Jewelry blog for “anything indie”. There are tons of really lovely, elegant indie picks on this blog, written by the lady behind Dreams & Jewelry, which is, you guessed it, a wonderful online jewelry shop. I really love this Singing Sweetly necklace. Order by December 15th to get your jewelry in time for Christmas.

November News

Posted by MissMalaprop on November 26th, 2006

I can’t believe Thanksgiving has already come and gone and November is almost over! I hope all of my US readers had a lovely Turkey Day and I hope everyone had an equally lovely weekend! Apologies to anyone who tried visiting my site over the weekend during some brief technical difficulties (which have since been remedied).

With the month of November soon coming to a close, there are lots of things to remind you about. Deadlines to enter to win free handmade goodies for example!

New Orleans Craft Mafia Handmade Holiday Gift-AwayThe deadline to enter the New Orleans Craft Mafia Handmade Holiday Gift-away is this Thursday, November 30th. All you have to do to enter to win is sign up for our e-mail newsletter, and you just might win a prize pack of handcrafted goods, including a gift certificate to my very own Etsy shop.

Another deadline for a chance to win even more indie prizes is also coming up this Thursday… Vote for your favorite online stores in the Rare Robin Awards and you’ll be automatically entered to win 1 of 7 gift baskets, which have a total combined retail value of over $1,300!

But don’t forget about our dear friends at Indie Fixx either… fill out the reader survey for a chance to win free stuff or vote for your favorite indie supporter in the I Support Indie Knockout Contest.

SpoonFed Art - Previously featured jewelry designer Karin Collins of SpoonFed Art asked us to mention the charity fundraiser she is currently participating in. Karin donated three of her unique jewelry creations (including the Violaine pendant pictured here) to the National Eating Disorder Association’s “Every BODY is Beautiful” Online Fundraising Auction. The auction ends December 6th and supports efforts to expand public awareness and prevention of eating disorders. Currently Karin’s three donated pieces are all in the auction’s “Top 10 Items” alongside a Marc Jacobs handbag and items autographed by country music stars Brooks & Dunn.

End of November reminders for NOLA-folk: check out a rare weekday show by The Bingo Show tomorrow night (tonight?), Monday, November 27th at 10pm at One Eyed Jacks. Presented especially with local service industry people in mind, this show is one not to be missed! Also, remember that Festivus starts next Sunday, December 3rd. I’ll be there, so stop by and say hi!
