All over the online indie shopping world I’ve been seeing great gift guides and contests, gearing up for Valentine’s Day. I’ve gotta admit, I haven’t really been thinking too much about Valentine’s Day lately, as this year the holiday falls less than a week before Mardi Gras.
Here’s a quick roundup of some of the best in independently produced Valentine’s Day gift giving, followed by my picks for a Mardi Gras done right.
My friend Jen over at Indie Fixx has whipped up both a Valentine’s Day Gift Guide and created a Looking For Love Contest. The winner gets the prize pack pictured at right, which is valued at over $350 and includes candles, cards, jewelry, body butter and more, all handmade by indie artists.
Another favorite indie shopping blog of mine, Rare Bird Finds, has also created a special gift guide, with unique products that are perfect for both lovers and lonely birds.
The wonderful Jena over at Modish has gathered up an amazing assortment of handmade cards, just in time for giving to your favorite Valentine. My favorite pick from her list is the penguin heart card.
If you’re thinking of giving something truly one of a kind to your sweetie this year, how about some personalized, hand stamped sterling silver jewelry from Alli’s Originals? There are plenty of great unique ways here to show your affection.
Okay, okay, enough of Valentine’s Day and the mushy stuff. It’s Mardi Gras time! Whether you’re in the area to celebrate or not, here are a couple of my Mardi Gras must haves:
King cakes from Haydel’s Bakery. They ship anywhere with UPS next day air, so you can get these no matter where you are. My absolute favorite bakery for king cakes!
Also, if you happen to see it in the freezer section of the grocery store, try out Blue Bell’s King Cake ice cream. It’s limited edition, and I have no idea if it’s available outside of this area, but it’s too great things combined, the taste of king cake and ice cream. Sooo yummy.
One of my favorite parts of Mardi Gras is getting to dress up in crazy outfits. Grab a wig from Fifi Mahony’s and pick out a Mardi Bra from my friend Miss Karina, and you’ll be ready to laissez le bon temps roulet!

Thanks for posting about my super sweet contest, Mallory!
